Cleaning Panama hats may seem like a complex task, but it really isn't...

The toquilla straw hat, or Panama hat, is a traditional Ecuadorian hat, despite its name. As we mentioned in another article, its name derives from its importance during the construction of the Panama Canal, when thousands of these hats were imported to protect workers from the sun. Today, they are still worn because they never go out of style and add a touch of elegance while protecting our heads from the sun. The summer heat and sun call for the Panama hat , one of the most exclusive accessories on the market. This article is dedicated entirely to this wonderful accessory. Therefore, we will discuss how to clean a Panama hat , how to store it, and how to reshape it if it has become misshapen.

But how do you clean a Panama hat?

When you buy a Panama hat , you know you're buying a unique, handmade product that needs special care so you can preserve it like a treasure for the rest of your life. Don't despair if your hat is very dirty or misshapen. A Panama hat easily regains its appearance if the problem is addressed properly. They commonly get dirty, misshapen, or even develop tears in the crown and brim, although the latter is a more difficult problem to fix.

First step to cleaning a Panama hat

To clean a Panama hat, you'll need a cloth (a napkin works well as it doesn't leave lint), mild soap, and hot water. Start by thoroughly mixing the hot water and mild soap in a container. Gently rub the surface with the cloth in a circular motion until the stain disappears. Applying a little ammonia or steam before rubbing will make it easier to remove, especially if the stain is from juice, blood, or grease. In these cases, it's best to use a brush to apply the mixture. The sweatband should also be checked, as it tends to get dirty from skin contact. If it's made of a textile material, gently rub it with water and a few drops of mild soap or ammonia. If it's leather, a damp cloth is best. Tip: Apply body lotion to keep it soft.

Second step: Ironing

The next step is to iron it. For this, you'll need another clean cloth, an iron, and a spacious area where you can iron it. Set the iron to a very low temperature and dampen the hat to apply the heat. But be careful! Never let the iron touch the hat, or you'll burn it. As you can imagine, ironing the brim is the easiest part. To do this, place the Panama hat on the chosen surface and gently iron the brim with the cloth. The crown, on the other hand, will be the most difficult to restore due to its shape. To do this, stuff the hat with paper or fabric and gently, using your hands and the iron, try to reshape the hat to its original form.

Final drying

Once you've finished cleaning your Panama hat, let it dry in a clean, shady place. If you've followed the steps correctly, the hat will be clean and return to its original shape.

Who can clean my hat?

Although we're explaining how to clean a Panama hat , we'd also like to emphasize that hatters are the best qualified for this type of work. Some people try to save money and then regret it because their hat is never the same again. That's why it's best to rely on a professional, as they have the right tools and experience. If you simply want to change the hatband, you can probably do it yourself, as it's a much simpler process. Perhaps you feel your favorite accessory needs a little something extra and want to brighten it up with a more colorful band instead of the usual classic black one.

How to store a Panama hat?

If we want our Panama hat to have a very long lifespan and be able to wear it for many years, we must be quite careful and treat it with care. This, in addition to the quality of the hat itself, will ensure it lasts almost a lifetime. Once you've cleaned it, it's time to store it. Since the hat is a rather delicate item, it needs to be stored in a very specific way. It's best to store a Panama hat in a climate-controlled environment with the perfect temperature and humidity . Otherwise, the natural straw could easily be damaged. Before storing it, it would be a good idea to brush it and check the condition of the fibers. They should be flexible and not crackle when pressed, which would be a sign that the hat is too dry and we should moisten it with steam or a water spray. If we do this, we'll let it dry in a cool place before storing it in its box.

How to store a Panama hat? The box should be cardboard, and a hatbox is even better. It's recommended to place tissue paper inside the crown to prevent it from being crushed and to absorb excess moisture. If you follow these instructions, your Panama hat will be in perfect condition the next time you wear it. Our boxes, in which we ship our Panama hats, are perfect for storing and keeping your hat in pristine condition. Our box is shown in the image above. If you have any questions, please ask, and we'll be happy to provide you with all the information you need.

How to shape a Panama hat?

If your hat has lost its original shape for any reason, it's very easy to restore it. Simply heat water in a pot or in the microwave if you prefer. When the water is boiling, direct the steam towards the hat, which will help soften it and allow it to regain its original shape. If the brim has lost its shape, you should use an iron as explained previously. Again, we emphasize that you should never use it in direct contact with the hat, or you will damage it.

Tips for maintaining my Panama hat

  • Panama hats are more flexible than other types of hats, although it is true that they need more humidity to last over time.
  • If you live in a dry place, store your hat in a humid place such as a cellar.
  • If, on the other hand, you live in a humid area, you should do the opposite: store your hat in dry places to prevent it from getting moldy.
  • Never leave it in areas where heat accumulates or you will lose it forever.
  • Always avoid getting it wet, as the fabric is very delicate and this can cause it to swell and become misshapen. If this happens, you can take it to a milliner, but first try letting it dry naturally.

Importance of hat quality

It's vital to emphasize how important it is to buy quality hats. At the time of purchase, we might prioritize price over other factors, but aspects like the quality of the straw or the finishing touches will make a high-priced hat seem like a bargain. Especially considering how long it will last if it's a good quality hat, making us feel good and comfortable. That's why we recommend going to specialized stores to buy them. In hat shops, you'll find quality Panama hats, and they'll also provide excellent advice on the quality, size, and colors that suit you best. Be careful, as many stores sell counterfeit hats.
